Artist's Statement
I am an environmental artist who documents the remote southern
coastline through the iconography of the New Zealand culturally
familiar; the foreshore, native plants, cribs, water, seabirds,
rocks, cabbage trees, sand, bush, boats, islands. Through the
devices of my chosen media I address a larger thematic such as
an areas history, the fragility or finiteness of ecosystems and
resources, and mans continuous struggle for equilibrium between
conservation and use.
I began painting professionally while living at Rakiura/Stewart
Island in the '70s & '80s and my work has always engaged
with the environment & conservation themes. Over recent years
I have been working on several series of paintings: Rakiura;
Coastal Icons; South Coast; and my Whakapapa, exhibiting regularly
in group and solo shows.
Having lived on both sides of Foveaux Strait, I've developed
a deep connection to this area of wild winds, dramatic skies
and spectacular coastal land/seascapes. The south coast also
has a calm and serene side - a place of contrasts and contradictions
that I find fascinating.
